Introducing Sensory Resources into your Classroom

Redbank Conference 2017

A great event, and an honour to be a part of it.

After spending two days with teachers from across NSW it was a great experience and a real eye-opener.

So often we get lost in the day to day running of our business that we easily forgot about the people our products serve. It was great to spend time with front-line educators that have awareness and use our products already in a classroom environment.

One question we seemed to come across on a regular basis was ‘how do we manage these resources in class?’ Teachers were finding it hard to implement resources such as Hand Fidgets and Deskercisers into the classroom environment. The general feedback was that teachers found it difficult to identify the children that truly needed the resources vs the ones that just wanted it because the child next to them had one, which resulted in some children feeling left out.

Whilst at the conference Tracy from Special Needs Australia who has over 10 years’ experience working in a classroom environment suggested to some of the teachers to build the use of resources in their lesson plan.

For example, if there are children in your class that require a Think N Roll or Deskerciser, introduce the resource to the children during class time, explain to them what it is, how it works, allow the children to add their thoughts and opinions with a questions and answers session and let the children take turns in using it.

By introducing the resource into the classroom like this it breaks down the barriers by helping children understand that it’s not a toy, it’s a tool to help you learn.
